What are the different type of IoT devices?

Other than Bolt wifi module. what are the different type of IoT devices?

IoT is a very vast field, and IoT Devices are effectively everywhere. The Bolt WiFi module would fall under the definition of a development board with a microcontroller. A microcontroller is a compact integrated circuit designed to govern a specific operation in an embedded system. A typical microcontroller includes a processor, memory and input/output (I/O) peripherals on a single chip. Basically, its the computing brain of any device you build with it.

Development Boards have microcontrollers and some other peripherals attached, like the Bolt module.

Some other popular IoT boards are:

  1. Raspberry Pi
  2. Arduino Uno
  3. Particle Photon
  4. Arduino Nano
  5. Jetson Nano
  6. ESP 32
  7. Banana Pi
  8. Arduino Mega
  9. Tessel 2

Bolt IoT is a firmware installed on the ESP8266. Made exclusively for easy programming and handling of data. And using the UART feature, we can use it to communicate with Arduino dev boards.

Earlier Bolt used to have SD card with the firmware installed on it. But with updates, cloud was ultimately the best option to keep the module safe.

Anything can be an IoT device. As long as its connected to the Internet. For portability and size, we use microcontrollers for this purpose.

Below is a List of Popular Microcontrollers for IoT

ATMEGA32 series, ATMEGA16 series, AVR128 series

2. Microchip

PIC18 series (including PIC12 and PIC16), PIC32 series, SAM series
